Retribution

Paladin

Paladin is a slow, methodical leveler. Plate and healing leave time to recover a pull that keeps going.

DPS TANK HEALER

Paladin survives by recognizing when a routine swing fight has become an emergency. Heal before health falls too far, use Divine Shield when you need uninterrupted time to recover, and leave Lay on Hands for the pull that survives the rest of the kit.

Talent route 10-60 Draft route
HC5/5
Pace2/5
Survival5/5
Dungeon5/5
Difficulty Slow and durable
Role Armored melee with emergency healing
Best duo Mage

Mage shortens the fights that usually slow Paladin down, while Paladin heals through damage and helps control an add. Frost Nova and Hammer of Justice keep the second mob in place while both players finish the first.

Leveling approach

Judge the Crusader, refresh Seal of Righteousness after Judgment, and use the strongest two-hander you own. Run Blessing of Wisdom when mana recovery controls the pace, then eat or drink between pulls as needed. Keep Lay on Hands ready for the fight that exhausts the rest of the kit.

Stat priority

  1. Weapon DPS - use the strongest two-hander available
  2. Strength
  3. Stamina
  4. Intellect (mana pool for Holy Light off-heals)
  5. Spirit

Professions

  • Take Blacksmithing with Mining if you want to craft through a missing weapon or armor upgrade. Use a strong quest or dungeon reward whenever it beats the crafted item.
  • First Aid lets you bandage around two-thirds health and keep mana available for Holy Light.
  • Take Engineering with Mining when you want another healing window. Drop Target Dummy between yourself and the ranged mob, then move before starting Holy Light.
  • Keep Cooking current for the recovery between fights, with Spirit or Stamina food when the recipe is worth the bag slot.

Alliance races

Dwarf - Bleeds, poisons, and diseases can keep a Paladin in the healing loop long after the mob dies. Dwarf can clear them with Stoneform and return to the route.
Human - Human stays close to the ordinary Retribution plan. Extra sword and mace skill supports the two-handed route, while Spirit helps during the recovery between pulls.

Horde races

Unavailable in Classic - Horde cannot roll Paladin in Vanilla Classic.

Route rhythm by level band

1-12 Levels 1-12

Fight green single targets and recover with food whenever possible. Casting Holy Light after every fight spends the mana you may need when the next pull changes.

12-24 Levels 12-24

By 24, Hammer of Justice, Lay on Hands, and Divine Protection are all available. Learn which one the pull needs before spending more than one cooldown, and use Deadmines or Shadowfang Keep to look for the next weapon upgrade.

24-40 Levels 24-40

Drink after every couple of pulls so Holy Light remains available. Caster-heavy camps take longer to control and spend more mana, so choose another route whenever one is available.

40-60 Levels 40-60

Plate improves the normal melee route after 40, and Blackrock Depths can provide the next gear upgrades when the group is disciplined. In Eastern Plaguelands, treat three-caster pulls as a serious threat while Lay on Hands is cooling down.

Also worth trying: Holy

Holy belongs in a dungeon-focused route where regular groups can replace the slower outdoor pace with reliable experience and gear.

  • Healing every group pull will empty the mana bar quickly, so carry several stacks of water and call for a drink before the tank moves.
  • Divine Favor at 30 guarantees a critical heal. Save it for the cast that needs to recover the tank from a sudden health drop.

Retribution Paladin Survival: When a Pull Turns Draft

Full page →

Retribution Paladin survives a bad pull by interrupting its cast, using Divine Shield to heal, and keeping Lay on Hands for the last reset.

When a pull turns

  • Use Hammer of Justice to interrupt the mob's heal cast. Avoid a caster pull while it is cooling down.

  • Use Divine Shield to open a Holy Light window, heal, and leave the pull while it is active.

  • Lay on Hands is for the pull that needs a full health reset after Divine Shield is down.

  • Blessing of Freedom clears roots and slows, so use it when the retreat lane closes.

Dungeon calls

  • Blessing of Wisdom goes on the healer and Might on melee. Refresh both before the pull.

  • In Retribution gear, decline the off-tank role before the pull.

  • Stop for the healer's drink because Blessing of Wisdom does not replace it.

Leave now

  • Leave when mana drops below 20% and the pull remains open.

  • Leave when Divine Shield is used and Lay on Hands is cooling down.

  • Leave when two casters land while Hammer of Justice is cooling down.

  • Leave when a patrol arrives and the retreat lane is hostile.
